Waffle Irons

At our house, Sunday morning finds the waffle irons coming out from the cabinets for rounds of Mom’s “Oh Boy Waffles” and bacon.

The house is filled with the smells of the waffles baking on the irons. We always have more than one waffle maker heating and baking the waffles. That way, more people can have a hot waffle sooner. No one likes to wait, but no one likes a cold waffle, either; so multiple irons will certainly help to keep folks in line while waiting for their waffles.

Waffle Iron Designs

Waffle irons come in different shapes and sizes. Some irons have inserts so that on holidays, like Valentine’s Day, you can make waffles shaped like hearts or for Christmas, bells or trees. Some irons you can changes sides: one side is the ‘waffle’ design, the other side is smooth to be used as a standard grill.

Do not expect your waffle iron(s) to be light in weight. They are a fairly heavy piece of kitchen equipment. If you are fortunate enough to find an old fashioned two-sided iron, that cooks two waffles at a time, buy it immediately! There are not many around – I even look at used restaurant equipment sales for such things. They are expensive (the double sided ones) but well worth the money.

The price range for regular irons will be varied according to the features available on the equipment. But nothing can replace the looks of wonder when you place a hot waffle, topped with fresh fruit, in front of your spouse, your children or your grandchildren. And don’t forget the warm Maple syrup to pour over the melting butter on your waffle!

There are various waffle irons that make ‘regular’ waffles, i.e. the thin ones or the thick or tall waffles, know as Belgian waffles. But that is for a different page.
